SEVERAL security guards for secondary schools in Kisarawe District, Coast Region have quit their jobs after not receiving their monthly wages this year.
Marumbo Ward Councilor in the district, Mayasa Yange said that all
the district secondary schools do not have security guards at the moment
following the action.
She said during a recent two-day full council meeting held in
Kisarawe town that the guards left their work after the schools failed
to pay them their wages. The schools are said to pay the guards after
receiving contributions from parents.
However, parents have stopped giving contributions to schools after
the government declared that secondary education is free with effect
from this academic year.
“There are no guards in all schools after the latter failed to pay
the former. Even though the schools are subsidised by the government,
the funds are still not enough,” she added.
Another councilor from the district, Abel Mudo also said that he
had recently received a resignation letter from a security guard in the
ward due to failure of payment.
He called on the district to seriously look into the matter and
find ways to solve the problem and in the process ensure security and
safety in secondary schools.
Kiluvya Ward Councilor, Kitare Aidan said that Makurunge Secondary
School in the ward faces a similar predicament and as a result the
school’s property is at risk of being stolen or vandalised.
The District Executive Director (DED), Mwanamvua Mrindoko, however,
told the meeting that the problem could be solved by requesting the
government to allow parents to contribute a little to be able to pay the
guards.
“This is a guideline and these are community schools, councilors
should meet with the parents and seek a solution by requesting the
government to allow contributions from parents,” she noted.
The councilors, however, resolved that the district council should
find its own resources to solve the problem and that it should also find
funds to ensure that each and every stuidents has a desk during
lessons.
